A royal decree was issued in 1986 to establish the University.
The University is awarded the Al Hussein Medal for Excellence.

The university has 12 colleges, one institute and 3 Deanships, 65 academic departments, 65 bachelor programs, 63 master programs, and two doctoral programs.

University Library
The library covers an area of 12,500 square meters.
The library accommodates 2,500 visitors at the same time.
The Library is pioneer in adopting RFID self-services equipments: Check-out Kiosks, 24/7 Check-in through outdoor Book-Drop, DLA devices used in book ordering, weeding, searching for lost items and automatic inventory.The library contains 195,000 books, 50,000 volumes, 900,892 e-books, and 54 databases with 144,567 electronic journals.
Scientific Research
The university allocates 5% of its budget to scientific research in addition to supporting external research (external local, external and global). The total budget for scientific research is about 7 million U.S. Dollars.
